Abstract

In the present study , an attempt has been made to investigate the role of nitric oxide (NO) in the pathophysiologic mechanisms of experimentally induced gastric ulceration caused by cold restraint-stress and indomethacin administration. Also, the possible interaction that might happen with concurrent administration of calcium channel blockers with various NO modulators in the two previously described ulcer models was investigated. In conclusion, nitric oxide plays an important regulatory role in maintaining gastric mucosal integrity. The protective effects of NO appears to be multifactorial including , vasodilatation and mucus production and attenuation of lipid peroxidation . therefore , the potential use of various NO donors could play a beneficialrole in protecting against various mucosal injuries.
