Abstract

Black cumin i a winter anannual herbaceou plant which is
bel nging to rh Ranunculaceae family and it is widely culrivat d
in various parts of th world and is usually grown in Mediterran fill
countries,
In EgYl t, Nigelk: sativa L i cultivated a a winter annual
crop. the eed are usually own in October and ovember, early
owing i preferable for better growth and eed yield. DiY climar
is more favorable for growing the plant because high relative
humidity render the plant more isceprible to insect and fungal
attack (Abou-Zeid, 1986).
Theds of black cumin on account of rh if aromatic
nature are u ed a a spice in cooking 0 that eeds are sold in th
market to be used as a condnnenr and native medicine. Tile major
components of Russian and Egyptian N. sativa L. seed have been
reported in earlier tudies {Kergiz and Otle, 993} These seeds
have many medicalpropertie , and they are digestive runulan as
w II a anninati e, aromatic, diuretic, diaphoneric, roma hie,
anrhelminri . (Hashfm and Elkie. , 1962; Salama, 1973’ Baba an
et al., 1978;. garwal et 01.,. 1979 and Al-Jasslr, 1992).
Moreover, compounds ” hich hav antimicrobial activiti
w re found in the volatil oil of N ativa L. seeds by Egyptian
worker (El- Alyr et al., 1975). Also, the eeds . ontain a
eponoside melanthinz a bitter compound igelline an essential
oil, from which nigelline can be extracted, and tannir (Jenes, 1977).
