Abstract the discovery of the jcticidal properties of this compound by Paul Muller in ))introduced a new drea in the control of insect vectors buman diseases such as Typhus and Malaria. But the high listence of this compound in soil and water for periods •creral years produces tremendous residue problems, and found to be accumulated and biomagnified in the tissues invertebrates, fish, birds, and mammals. The major environmental problem with DDT results from dehydrochlorication to form DDE or 2,2-bis (p_-chlorophenyl)-l, Loro ethylene which has essentially the same lipophilic icies as DDT but is much more stable in living systems. DDE becomes the major degradation product stored in animal and increases in percentage with the trophic level of organism. DDT entering the bodies of animals is stored in lipids •lovely eliminated by successive dechlorinations and de-Lorinations, to form DDA or bis- (p^-chlorophenyl) acetic has substantially more water partitioning and can itcd in urine. |
