Abstract The discovery of synthetic implants that are both histocomaptible and biodegradable opened a new era in the search for long-acting steroidal contraceptives. Programmed delivery of contraceptive steroids has its origin in the early 1970s with the discovery that histocomptible polymers in the form of subdural implants could be utilized to achieve slow release of steroid hormones . This leads to the development of medicated contraceptive system of various types including solstice implants, medicated intrauterine, intracervical and interavaginal devices and biodegradable implants and inject able microcapsule formulations. |
