Abstract

Pear is one of the importance deciduous fruits in Egypt. It van be considered the third in the importance among the other deciduous fruit in the world and the fourth among all fruits together.
The pear tree is a temperate zone deciduous fruit tree characterized by distinct period of rest (endodormancy) which extended from late fall till early spring. Regrowth and flowering in the new season needs overcoming such dormancy (West wood, 1978).
It has been though that the chilling requirements needed to break its endodormancy are low and can be fulfilled during warm winters that prevail in Egypt where chilling units never exceed 300 hours. Recent reports have shown that chilling requirement of Le conte cv. Is 600 to 680 hours (Sherman and Crocker, 1982).
