Abstract This study was conducted to identify the information needs of patients with myocardial infarction (MI) and their families before hospital discharge. The study recruited 100 adult patients and their caregivers at the medical wards of Menoufiya University Hospital. The tools of the study were comprised of an interviewing questionnaire that included information needs assessment schedule to assess areas of information needs in relation to disease, in addition to a sociodemographic and medical background data sheet. The main findings were that patients information about MI were high as regard meaning of MI, but low in relation to symptoms and signs, investigation, pathophysiological changes, causes, complication and rehabilitation information. Family members’ information about MI were low about symptoms and signs, investigation, meaning of MI, pathophysiological changes, causes, complications and rehabilitation information. The information of both patients and their family members correlated positively and significantly with hospital stay. Information of patients about MI increased significantly with attained level of education Main source of information for family members and patients was the physician The nurse played a minor role in information provision to patients and their family members. The present study recommended that: Rehabilitation for myocardial infarction must be implemented through various team members in which the nurse should play a pivotal role, In-hospital teaching methods (e.g., audiovisual material, booklets, etc.) could be used for patients and their caregivers to enhance the learning process during hospitalization, Nurses should be trained and instructed to provide the proper assistance and information about warning symptoms of MI, exercise, diet, medications, stress management, lifestyle changes and risk factors. It is important as well for nurses to be aware of the feelings and needs of caregivers (e.g., spouses), who may desire different and more detailed information to the patient, Augmentation of the role of mass media is necessary to raise the awareness of the public about myocardial infarction and cardiac rehabilitation. Further research is recommended to explore reasons for failure of nurses to carry out their educational role toward myocardial infarction patients and their caregivers. |
