Abstract Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-ppaecum L») family Leguminosae is an erect annual herb widely cultivated in Egypt. The protein content of the seeds varies between 20 and 32^, it is believed to be a good supplement for cereals because of its high lysine and tryptophan con¬tent, whereas cysteine and methionine are only present to a low extent. Thus fenugreek can provide the essen¬tial amino acids which are known to be deficient in ce- (1),(2) reals . Fenugreek has been cultivated in the Mediterranean >a, in North Africa, in India, in Near East, and Abys¬sinia. The principal exporting countries include India, l^ance, Lebanon, Egypt and Argentina. The annual production and planted area of fenugreek • flu Bgypt through 1961 to 1982 is given in Table I. The planted area ranged between 16000 and 44000 and the production ranged from 80000 to 169000 ibes ( The ardabe = 155 Kg.). |
